Ben Arndt & Regine Scheibel This day started for all of us already in the night. Most of us woke up at 2 am because the bus shuttle which took us to the airport arrived at 3am at the hotel. Some of us stayed up the short the night in order to sleep on the plane, others slept for a few hours. Obviously everyone was very tired because of this. So we drove a last time through Seattle. After a few hours of waiting we took the airplane to Newark. It was beautiful to see Seattle at night. The first flight to Newark took a bit more than 5 hours and a lot of us managed to get some sleep. We had a 3 hour stop in Newark where we said goodbye and thank you to Mr Most. The last day of our trip began somewhere over the Atlantic and ended with our arrival in Hamburg in the morning. After two exhausting flights from Seattle over Newark to Hamburg we were all happy to finally arrive home to meet our family and friends again. Everyone was tired and jet-lagged and after claiming our baggage and one last group picture we all recognized that this trip has come to an end. Everyone enjoyed this awesome trip to America and nobody will ever forget it. Friday, October 4th 2013
Sanya Stojanow Today we had a full program so our last day in America started at 8.15 am. We had to be ready at 9.30 am so we needed enough time to get prepared and to eat breakfast. Most of our students were on time and after the last student arrived at our meeting point we went to the EMP Museum by foot. Arriving at the museum we started our tour at 10.10 am. A guide wanted us to leave our bags and jackets in a room and he shortly explained the rules and introductions to us. Then we had about 2 hours on our own to explore the museum and the history of it. It includes some of the most significant moments in rock music, science fiction and popular culture in world's history. First I went with some friends through the rock music history. We decided to let out the science fiction part because we wanted to have enough time at the sound lab. Josi and I tried a lot of instruments (it sounded so bad) and then I built a band with Ben and Lara. Ben played the guitar, Lara tried to sing “Wonderwall” and I tried to play the drums. Ben had to help Lara because she didn't know the lyrics and we had a lot of fun! It was time to leave the museum and together we went to downtown Seattle. Our teachers gave us time to eat luck and then explore the city or to do some last minute shopping and we had to be at the next meeting point at 3.45pm. We had to find the office for the Underground Tours on our own, which was our next point on the program. In our free time I went with Lara, Josi and Caroline to Taco Grill an each of us ate a big Burrito. It was so much that we were pretty full and we couldn't move a lot! Having finished eating we met another group and Caroline, Josi and I decided to go on a short shopping trip (because we didn't buy a lot stuff before ;-) ) . We bought some gifts for family and friends and then we walked to our meeting point where we met our group. We took pictures of all students and teachers with Nike free shoes and 14 of 23 guys wore these shoes! Pretty funny :) We started our underground tour with a funny tour guide who told us that we were going to find a lot of rats in the underground! Things I really wanted to know before I started the tour! ;) He told us a lot about Seattle's history and the reason why Seattle has an underground. This was in my point of view the most interesting fact: Seattle's underground was ground level at the city's origin in the mid-19th century. After the streets were elevated these spaces fell into disuse. They constructed a new city on top of the old buildings and today it is still a good tourist attraction. After the tour my group decided to go to the hotel. We made short stops at different stores and we arrived on time at the hotel where we met our group at 7 pm. We looked for a good restaurant but we couldn't find one with which everybody agreed. So I ate for the perceived twentieth time at Subway. We could order a foot long Sub so we had 6 inches (means a half Sub) for diner and 6 inches for the next morning! Back in the hotel we talked about the following plans. Our next meeting was going to be at 3 am because our bus was going to pick us up an bring us to the airport. We were glad that the most of us had their half-Sub because we were not going to receive any breakfast! We had to decide on our own if we wanted to stay awake or if we wanted to sleep for a short time. The teachers told us we were old enough to decide on our own and they just wanted us to be ready and on time at 3 am. First Caroline an I went to the boys room and hung out a little bit with them but then we decided to go sleep. After a long and eventful day we were glad that we could sleep. It didn't matter that we only had 2 ½ hours before we had to wake up again! Thursday, October 3rd 2013
Tim Klintwort Today was the last day we had in Philomath. We had to be at school very early, at 7:15 am, to get our bus which brought us to Seattle. I woke up at 6am, I said goodbye to my host dad Alain who had to leave very early because he is a teacher in a school in Sweethome, a little town near Philomath. When Austin and I left to get to school I also had to say goodbye to my host sister and my host mother. That was really sad because I had a great time in Philomath. After that Austin took me to school by car, where we met all the exchange students for the last time. All the German students said goodbye to their families and then we finally took our bus to Seattle. After a 5-hour bus trip we finally arrived in Seattle, we left our luggage in the hotel and went to Pike Place Market were we walked around in groups of three or more people. We saw the Gumwall and the first Starbucks. After that we went to the Spaceneedle. On top of it we had a great view of the skyline of Seattle. We ate in a big hall with many fastfood restaurants before we went back to our hotel. Before we went sleeping we all watched a movie together. What a sad but also great day! Ben Arndt Sad but true... today was the last whole day we had with our host families in Philomath/Corvallis. I had to wake up very early this morning, because my host father drove us to school, and he has to be at work early. He's teaching 3rd in Corvallis. I was very tired. On the way to Philomath it was very foggy, so we couldnt see very far. We arrived at school at half past 7 , so we just relaxed a little bit and Carter talked to his friends. A lot of the students came to school dressed in the house colours of their grades. Some of them looked totally like someone out of the Harry Potter movies! In the first period I went to the broadcast media class. It is the place where they film the daily announcements for the school. It was a lot of fun. In the lunch break the students from PHS played a game called 'musical chairs'. We know this game in Germany also as 'Reise nach Jerusalem'. Luckily school ended this day at 1:10 pm, because on every Wednesday there is an early release day. So we had more time with our host families. Carter's grandma picked us up from school and brought us home. But Carter had forgotten his keys at home this morning, so we drove to his grandma's house because she has keys to their house. After an hour of relaxing Cater's father came home and we drove to American Dream Pizza. Carter's siblings, Andrew and Danielle, and his mother ,Teresa, were already waiting there. The pizza there was so delicious!!!! After dinner Carter and I went to the powderpuff game at school. It's a football game, but girls are playing. And instead of tackling they have flags. So the other team has to pull the flag out to 'tackle' the other person. At the game there were also boys who were cheerleaders instead of girls as usally. It was kind of weird, but very funny! After the game there was a big bonfire right behind the football field. On the top of the fire there was a tiger toy as a symbol for the team against they are playing next week. The fire was very huge and warm. It was very nice! Directly after the bonfire there was also a dance - outside! It was kind of cold when you were not near to the fire. After this eventful day we went back home and fell directly asleep. Tuesday, October 1st 2013 Laura Bielert Today was the second last day here in Philomath. The day started with a homeroom in the first period. We talk about negativ and positiv aspects regarding school here also comparing it to our school in germany. Throughing a pencil case around we also talked about positiv things we could may be take back as ideas for our school. For example we thought it would be fun to have a dance like homecoming too. After homeroom we were free to go whereever we wanted to go. In second period I went to choir wich was a lot of fun. Afterwards I joined the class sport teams where we played badminton. In fourth period I went to ceramics and in fifth to foods. Baking pizza was fun and also delicious! Right after school I went with Robina to Lara's house. We just hang around and watched High School Musical. It was so funny to see all the things in the movie which are actually really like that here at Philomath High School. In the evening there was a Goodbye potluck in school. Everybody brought some nice delicious food. There were also some lovely speeches in which we thanked our great hosts. Besides the Germans prepared a lipsynce with the "Fliegerlied". We also had some nice and funny games like musical chairs and green light, red light. I really enjoyed these games! Anne Feindt This morning after we woke up, we didn't dress as usual because homecoming week started today. Homecoming is a tradition in the USA where the students "celebrate" the start of the new school year. It takes place about a month after the start of the new school year. During Homecoming week there is another theme every day which tells you how to dress up. Today was the theme "'Merica". Because of that a lot of people dressed up in the colors red, blue and white or in country style. The combinations were sometimes crazy but it was funny. But it was a pity that not everybody took part. I was in geometry in the first period in school today. It's a kind of math class. And I realized that we are much further in Germany. In the second period I was in team sports. There I played badminton against a couple of people. I was in forensics in the third period. Forensics is a kind of science class, where they deal with criminal cases and they try to solve the cases with scientific techniques. That's an interesting subject. In the fourth period I was in ceramics. There I got my ceramic I had worked on the last few times I was there. In the fifth period I was in German. We talked with the American students about a couple of topics as weekend-activities; summer vacation and food. After this today was "Princess Assembly" instead of advisor.First all the princesses came in with their escorting boys. After this the Lipsync-Competion started. There were five teams which took part in this competion. Finally three girls who presented "The evolution of Miley Cyrus" won. This was very funny and I wish we would have something like this at our school. After school we actually wanted to hike to Mary's Peak but because of the bad weather at the weekend the trip was unfortunatly cancelled. :( So we all went home. In the evening my host family and I went to the Mexican restaurant in Philomath named IXTAPA . It was very delicious there. :) Sunday, September 29th 2013 Katharina Gieselberg I woke up at 8 am. Then I ate bagels and cereal with raspberries and strawberries. After the breakfast my grandma drove Josie and me to church where we met Megan and their mother. In church the people talked about the homework the pastor gave them, that they need to pray for three people who deserve and don't deserve it. After the short meeting we teens went to the room with the pastor to have our lesson. We learned something about Jonah and the whale. After the lesson was the real service. Today there was communion and of course 'The Lord's Prayer' which is nice to hear because every person in the world knows this prayer. After church we changed our plans for the day because of the rainy weather and drove to the Heritage Mall where we met Josi (Josephine not my exchange sister Josie 😁). Megan and Josie bought shoes for their prom and I bought the lip stick from Miley Cyrus video 'We can't stop'. We just went to another mall and to a thrift store before riding home. In the evening we went to the Mexican family restaurant in Philomath which was very good. Friday, September 27th 2013 Regina Kneip Times passes by so fast! Today was already our last day in Newport. We had to leave our rooms at 8:45, and then we had to walk over that endless bridge again for the whale watching. The chance to actually see whales was only 50%, but optimistic as we are, we tried it anyway (well, the other possibility was doing nothing in the hotel-lobby ;)). As soon as we were on the boat, it started raining. While the waves were getting taller, our group got sicker, colder and less optimistic. After about 30 minutes, we turned around and drove back to the harbor. A few brave students decided to go to the city with Hr Begehr, and the rest of us went, wet and freezing, back to the hotel. The bus picked us up and drove us home, most of us were tired and slept all the way. Back in school, we wanted to wait for our Americans to go home, but instead of advisory, there was kind of an announcement. Let's just say, it was the American way to tell the students a few things. I'm not sure if I maybe missed something, but I think they had a huge show with costumes and stage props, divided the students into the Harry Potter houses, and even had games on stage, only to tell the students what to wear on the next few days and when the dances are! It's not like there aren't posters everywhere in school, it's really hard not to see them! But anyway, after that we could go home and take a nap to be fit for the cosmic bowling in the evening. Marie and I went to Bailey's house and enjoyed one of the best things here: netflix ;) We started to watch a whole episode of an american TV show, and got ready with white clothes and nail polish which glows in the dark. The bowling was pretty cool, even though I was... not the best... We arrived at home at 2pm, and fell in our beds, tired but satisfied :) Saturday, September 28th 2013
Tim Klintwort Unfortunately this is already our last weekend in Oregon. I woke up at 10 am. We had some delicious Mexican breakfast with scrambled eggs and meat with a burrito. At noon my host dad Alain and I went golfing at a friends house. Marc owns a little green and we played the ball from different distances. It was probably a little crazy idea because the weather was really bad and we got soaked after a few minutes. But it was still really fun and we got to hit some good shots. After the golfing, Alain and I went to a supermarket to buy some stuff for dinner. When we got home we immediately changed our wet clothes and had some snacks. In the afternoon my host parents, Austin and I went to Austin's sister Chelsea and her husband Mark. They live in a house in a forest near Philomath. Mark likes to hunt in his free time so he has a lot of guns and he took Alain, Austin and me to a cabin (which was actually a house) for shooting. We shot with a lot of different guns: hunting guns, a pistol, a pumpgun and a military assault rifle. At first I was a little afraid of shooting but then I got used to it. After shooting we went back to Mark's house and had dinner. We had some very good deer and meat. While we were eating we didn't realize that it was very stormy outdside. But when we headed back home the whole street was covered and when we got home it was already 9 pm, so we watched some TV and went to bed. |
